Water contamination is often a deadly no-no for a machine. Water
contamination plagues almost every industry. Water contamination
in oil affects both the oil and the machine. It promotes oxidation
of the lubricant’s base oil and washes out some additives
which are attracted to water. Later, water will typically separate
to the bottom of the sump. It hydrolyzes (chemically attacks)
additives, which compromise their performance, and in some cases,
produces highly corrosive by-products. A water-degraded lubricant
cannot fully lubricate and protect the machine, which leads
to excessive wear and failure. Water also attacks the machine
directly.
Water contamination can lead to Rust and Corrosion where
it directly attacks iron and steel surfaces to produce oxides.
Water combines with acid in the oil to increase the corrosive
potential in the attack of metals. Rust and corrosion lead
to rapid surface deterioration when abrasive particles are
present. Vaporous Cavitation occurs if the vapor pressure
of water is reached in the low pressure regions of a machine,
such as the suction line of a pump, the pre-load region of
a journal bearing for example .The water droplets can deteriorate
a small area of the machine’s surface with great force
which causes localized surface fatigue and erosion. Water
contamination also increases the oil’s ability to entrain
air, thus increasing gaseous cavitation.
With the advent of increased online global monitoring , the
EASZ-1 is your device of choice because it is able to measure
in lower ppm ranges and higher percentage ranges. This enables
it to not only measure absorbed water in your oil system but
also free water which can appear at any time. Simply sampling
for water in oil is not enough. This is because samples are
extracted at a particular time of day , depending where the
sample is taken, how it is handled and the laboratory used
to perform analysis you have a delay period. Installing the
EASZ-1 is like added insurance for operators of oil types
of oil circulating processes because it will immediately react
to a change in the water in oil content of a system so that
immediate action can be taken to resolve the issue. |
