Environmental concerns in the Marine Industry

Regulations to prevent the pollution of the marine environment are increasingly causing ship owners and managers to select anti-pollution sterntube systems. Design Features of Stern Tubes

Water sealing rings are very important and should Be designed to prevent contaminating the bearing lubrication systems. The system should be designed to always provide a “fail safe” so that under normal conditions neither wear nor failure of any sealing element will allow oil to leak outboard or seawater to enter the oil system. Provisions should be made for continuous monitoring of the condition of the seal system from inboard, as required. The EASZ-1 can be fitted to almost any existing system whether fixed or controllable pitch propellers and is ideally suited for retrofitting to existing vessels as well as applying to new constructions. Any water leakage from seals should be readily observed from inboard at any time.

Should water build up or leakage occur, or if the ingress is excessive, a dry contact can provide a warning to the engine control room. If several EASZ-1 units are installed it will Be possible to obtain online analysis of the returning fluids that can be used in conjunction with faultfinding to determine which sealing rings are damaged and to what extent.

Should an emergency situation occur in which Excessive water leakage enters the online EASZ-1 can respond Within 1 second, thus enabling control circuits to Actuate thus preventing water from entering the sterntube. The vessel can continue in service with the knowledge that frequent checks are not necessary because the EASZ-1 is continually monitoring the condition of the lubrication oil in the sterntube and header tank.
